The Finals of Men’s Metro A & B Interclub competitions were played on Sunday at Waimairi Beach in fine, cool conditions with the course in great order, considering the recent weather conditions.
Both matches were very tight affairs.
In Metro A, top qualifier Clearwater were up against second qualifier Russley who defeated them in round-robin play. The Clearwater side of, from left Robin Clements, Aaron McKenzie, Chris Reid, Alan Shaw (with trophy), Joel Iggo, Mac Finlayson, Steve McNally, Dion Kerr, Tony Falloon and Mike Frisby managed to turn the tables this time edging out a gallant Russley team 4.5-3.5 with four matches going to the final hole.
In head-to-head battles, Dion Kerr bt Robbie Blount 2/1; Steve McNally lost to Ron He 7/6; Mac Finlayson bt Mike Davidson 1up; Chris Reid bt Simon Howe 4/2; Aaron McKenzie bt Steve Cleave 7/6; Joel Iggo halved with Ross Bailey; Alan Shaw lost to George Morris 2 down and Robin Clements lost to Tony Marriott 1 down.
The Metro B Final was also a real arm wrestle between top seed Russley and third seed Harewood, with five of the eight matches going the distance before the Russley team of, from left Steve Garland, Thad Goeysinsup, Cameron Bartlett, Dylan Everett, Andrew Wise, Paul Ainsworth, Andrew Hay and Mike Yorston got over the line against a valiant Harewood side 4.5-3.5.
Head-to-head, Thad Goeysinsup halved with Doug Claridge; Dylan Everett bt Tom Sevier 1up; Mike Yorston lost to Scott Harris 4/3; Andrew Wise lost to Scott Double 2/1; Cameron Bartlett bt John Gold 5/4; Steve Garland bt Chris Straker 1 down; Paul Ainsworth halved with Carson Scott and Andrew Hay halved with Les Keys.
